The Cochrane review on VR for stroke
190 trials, 7,188 participants, and a result that reversed the 2017 verdict. The most authoritative answer we have on whether VR helps stroke recovery, caveats included.
Most of what gets written about virtual reality in stroke rehabilitation quotes a number without the study around it. These commentaries do the opposite. Each one takes a single paper, trial record, or article and explains what it actually found, how strong the evidence is, where its limits sit, and what it means for people working to recover movement or unlearn chronic pain.
A note on scope: much of this research is about stroke recovery, and Karuna is not a stroke rehabilitation provider. Our program treats chronic pain and mild traumatic brain injury. We read the stroke literature closely because it is where the mechanisms behind mirror therapy and VR embodiment training have been studied most rigorously. If you are recovering from a stroke, your rehabilitation team is the right place to take these questions.
